WHAT DO WE NEED TO START OUR JOURNEY?
It is necessary to know the tastes and hobbies of the students in order to help in their development. The topic of travelling is usually one in which students are very interested in. To introduce these topic, the teacher should ask the students a few questions about traveling such as:
- Do you like travelling?
- How often do you travel?
- What are the important things that you need in a trip?
- How can you go to that place?
Well, now the teacher will explain the kids that they are going through an amazing adventure. Tell the kids that before they start travelling they need to prepare our luggage, the passport, etc.
TASK 1: PACK THE LUGGAGE
In this activity, they will practice listenings skills. Tell them that they are going to listen to a video about how a family is packing for their trip and the problems that they are having. An example of it can be this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4oedftitec .
Before, we listening to the video we need to make a little review of the vocabulary with the students. After listening to the video (twice) we can ask the students questions such as what has happened in the video? What do they usually pack in the suitcase when they go to a village, a beach or a city...? What can they take to entertain themselves during the trip? Or if they pack the luggage themselves or if their parents do it for them, etc.
This activity depending on the type of listening can be good for every grade of primary, but in this case the listening would be for children of first or second grade of primary.
TASK 2: PASSPORT.
To travel we need an identity document or a passport to go to one country or another. So in this activity they are going to fill in the sections that appear in a passport. For example, name, surname, date of birth, etc. The other pages will be to add a picture and information of the places they have visited.
With this activity you can practice the writing skills with all grades of primary.
TASK 3: GOING ON HOLIDAYS.
Explain the students that now they are going to see an example of how their future journey can be. It is a story of a couple that is telling us what they have done to plan their trip until they arrive at the hotel.
One reading that you can use for this activity can be: https://en.islcollective.com/english-esl-worksheets/reading-comprehension/reading-for-detail-deep-reading/travel/travelling/89164.
After we read this, we can ask the students some questions. If you want to make this part of the reading more dynamic you can do a quiz game., dividing the class in two groups.
Some questions that you can use are:
- What are the facilities of the hotel?
- How have they traveled?
- What are they packing in the suitcase?
- How do the wife and the husband check in the hotel?
- How do they check in at the airport?
- Order the sequence:
- Look for tourist attraction
- Go to the airport
- Book the hotel
- Check out from the hotel
- Check in
With this activity you can practice the reading skills with 5 - 6 grade of primary.
TASK 4: ROLE - PLAYING
Explain the students that now they are going to be actors and they will have to represent a play of a travelling situation. Form groups of 4 - 3 students each group. Each group will choose a situation and they will have to represent it. We can give the students some minutes to prepare it, before they do the rol- playing. This are some examples that I have used in my classes:
In this activity, the students will practice speaking skills and it can be adapted for students between of 4 - 6 grade of primary.
